Program

9 March 2010 Day One Theme: Teaching Creative Writing in the Academy

8:30am: Payment of registration (pre-registration required)
9:00am: Welcome by Kingsley Bolton, Chair Professor of English & English Department Head at The City University of Hong Kong.
9:15am: Keynote address: Robin Hemley (University of Iowa. Director, Nonfiction Writing Program)

10:00am-12:00am: Roundtable led by teachers of creative writing who will give short provocative papers (10 mins) leading to interactive discussion with participants. Provocateurs: Andrew Cowan(University of East Anglia, Director of the Creative Writing), Catherine Cole (RMIT University, Professor of Creative Writing), Nury Vittachi (Hong Kong Polytechnic University, teaches storyline), Alex Kuo (Washington State University, Writer-in-Residence & Professor of English), Simone Lazaroo (Murdoch University, Senior Lecturer Creative Writing), Jon Cook – (University of East Anglia, Professor of English) – Moderated by Xu Xi.

2:00pm-4:30pm: Featured Writers will each speak briefly (5 – 7 minutes) about different aspects of their creative writing process, followed by brief illustrative readings of their work (5-7 mins max). Featured writers include: Robin Hemley, Catherine Cole, P.K. Leung, Alex Kuo, Andrew Cowan, and Sharmistha Mohanty

10 March 2010 Day Two Theme: Teaching Creative Writing in Asia

9:00am: Keynote address: Marilyn Chin (San Diego State University Poetry Faculty, MFA in Creative Writing)

9.45am-11:45am: Roundtable with provocateurs: Brian Castro (University of Adelaide, Chair of Creative Writing), Ouyang Yu (University of Wollongong, Research Fellow), Jose Dalisay(University of the Philippines, Professor of English and Creative Writing), Rukmini Bhaya Nair (Indian Institute of Technology, Professor of Linguistics & English), Dai Fan (Sun Yat-Sen University, Chair of English), Kim Cheng Boey (University of Newcastle, Senior Lecturer) — Moderated by Jane Camens.
2:30pm-4:30pm: Featured Writers include: Marilyn Chin, Ouyang Yu, Rukmini Bhaya Nair, Bernice Chauly,Kim Cheng Boey and Agnes Lam.

Opening of the 2010 Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival

12 March 2010 – Trip to Sun Yat-Sen campus, Guangzhou (on request)


An additional session is offered across the Chinese border at the Zhuihai campus of Sun Yat-Sen University, one hour by ferry from Hong Kong. This can be arranged on request thanks to an invitation by the university’s Chair of the Department of English, Dai Fan, who is teaching one of the first creative writing programs in English in China, started in September 2009. Her invitation is to international teachers of creative writing in the academy willing to talk to her students. Those who join us are responsible for obtaining their own China visa. Numbers limited. Symposium registration cost (for part or all) is HK$250 (US$33), discounted to HK$100 for members of the Asia-Pacific Writing Partnership. (APWP registration is free).

Seating capacity is limited. Early registration recommended.

Selected papers from the symposium will be published by TEXT: Journal of Writing and Writing Courses, an international electronic refereed journal on http://www.textjournal.com.au/.
